BIOGRAPHY & CREATIVE PRACTICE
As a lifelong artist, musician and free-lance content producer, I have developed my own methods and practices for personal and client-led projects throughout my career. While I am primarily a sound engineer, musician and music producer, my underlying interest in all artistic mediums has enabled me to contribute to various artistic projects. Having a wide understanding of numerous mediums enables me to manage all aspects of a production, from initial inception to eventual release using this wide skill set and I can benefit any creative endeavor. Specific education and self-motivated learning led me to develop a definitive personal style and aesthetic that is instantly recognizable as my own and whether its recording a band, shooting and editing photography or video, or creating visual elements for web, printed media or visual artworks - I have always focused on common goals, either on my own personal projects or within a creative team to the highest possible standards.
EDUCATION & WORK
My interest in music performance and production led me to complete a BA (Hons) Degree in Sound Technology at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). I immediately went on to work in the music industry and have built numerous studios, a record label and now work at a prestigious studio in Wicklow called The Meadow.
A very good eye and ear has driven me to learn many instruments, equipment and methods to deliver quality audio and visual productions and compositions. A broad understanding and interest in learning classical artistic practices and modern software techniques has allowed me to develop skills to create contemporary content in many forms.
Personal composition work in both electronic and organic music genres has enabled me to understand both sides of the creative process. Similar personal endeavors in photography, film and design have also helped me develop a unique style that not only benefits my own personal works but has been acknowledged by established artists and promoters.
I have worked with many great Irish bands and artists including Lankum, Girl Band, Alarmist, No Spill Blood, New Secret Weapon and Bats. I have also built strong relationships and work regularly with top Irish promoters like Aiken Promotions and U:Mack.
I have also worked at a high level in the Irish live sound arena for Mikam Sound, Acoustik Productions and various other production companies like Aiken Promotions. Some of the notable venues, festivals and events I have worked at include Vicar St, Electric Picnic, Knockanstockan and various RTÉ / TG4 events.
NOTABLE PROJECTS & AWARDS
I have worked on numerous records in the past 10 years, including RTE Choice Music Award nominated songs and albums (including this year with Bitch Falcon). Artists of note include Lankum, Girl Band, Alarmist, No Spill Blood, Cloud Castle Lake, New Secret Weapon, Come On Live Long, All Tvvins, and Meltybrains? I have also built a large portfolio of Live, Studio and Press shots for numerous Irish and International artists including Girl Band, All We Are, Lankum, Ty Segall, Battles, Beak, Thee Oh Sees and Shellac. I have also a large collection of Street Photography from places I have lived and worked including New York, Dublin, London, Berlin, Chicago and Liverpool which have been exhibited in Ireland and internationally.
In the past 10 years, I have produced videos for many bands in Ireland and the UK, ranging from studio footage to recordings of live performances to official music videos. Notable collaborations include Girl Band, New Secret Weapon and Alarmist to name a few. My recent work has primarily focused on producing documentaries concerning album productions (namely the “making of” No Spill Blood’s debut album and a similar but larger project covering New Secret Weapon’s second album tracking in Chicago with Steve Albini).
I have also recently received three awards from The Arts Council in Ireland. Firstly a Covid Response Award in Film for a documentary I am working on showing the making of Girl Band’s second album “The Talkies”. I received an Agility Award last year to complete a collection of EP’s of old electronic music I have been working on privately over the past 20 years, under the moniker of Durst and with Rían Trench of Solar Bears. I have also just received another Agility Award to work on a similar project of old songs I wrote in more classical instrumentation under my own name or a yet to be decided pseudonym.
