I bought The Guardian newspaper every day of the year in 2013 in order to create these collages to use as the accompanying artwork for my own solo electronic music, which I started creating back in 2001 for a period of about 12 years. These songs were left unfinished while I focused on my recording, photography and video-making career.
I am now finishing and releasing them with my production partner Rían Trench, under the moniker DURST, for the twentieth anniversary of starting these tunes.
Starting back in January 2021, I also began the process of creating this artwork for teaser collections into the songs for release on Bandcamp. Since then I have been collecting all the papers from the corresponding month back in 2013 – scanning all the things that are relevant in the moment for me personally, to the current time, or from the past – and then clipping them all and collaging them in Photoshop to create the final pieces for every month of the year. This process is taking on average about ten days of every month, as the detail and associations take time to figure out and are integral to the impact of the work.
These prints are of the finest quality and I thought they would be a good physical item to offer while work on the overall music continues throughout the year.
I plan to release prints per quarter for the rest of 2021, while we get a better idea of how we want to go forward with presenting the final music and artwork in a physical form over the next couple of years.
